WNBA pulls plug on Monarchs
After an intense, three-week effort failed to enlist Bay Area investors to assume control of the Monarchs, WNBA President Donna Orender on Tuesday delivered the final, perhaps inevitable blow.
The Monarchs era is over.
Folded, disbanded, dissolved. Or just call it a nasty divorce, minus the attorneys’ fees.
Ticha Penicheiro, Kara Lawson, Nicole Powell, Chelsea Newton, DeMya Walker, Rebekkah Brunson and Hamchétou Maïga-Ba – all members of the 2005 WNBA championship team – will play elsewhere next summer. But they won’t be wearing the same uniform, and they won’t be within driving distance.
