Southern U Holds Out for Sixth Win
The Southern University women’s basketball team held off a 16-4 run, late in second half by the Nicholls State University Lady Colonels to earn their sixth victory of the season with a 56-51 win.
SU (6-2) was led by senior Tenesha Brown who scored 12 points and dished out two assists. Junior Jamie Floyd posted her first double double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Jaguars held an 11 point lead, their largest of the game, at the nine minute thirty-one second mark in the second half before Nicholls began chipping away. The Lady Colonels produce their 16-4 run which lead to a 51-50 lead (their last of the game). SU’s Brown then hit her final field goal of the game to put the Blue and Gold up 52-51. Junior Tiffany Foster and senior Ashley Augerson hit the final baskets of the contest at the charity stripe to secure the Jaguars fourth victory over an in-state rival.
“It was a tough ball game,” said head coach Sandy Pugh. We couldn’t make a jump shot or layup, but everybody contributed in their own way.
Southern out-scored the Lady Colonels in points in the paint 28-14, points off turnover 23-12, second chance points 11-5 and bench points 29-13.
The Blue and Gold will take to the road to play the University of Florida in the Florida Classic on Sunday, December 20. Tip-off for the contest is set for 2:00 p.m.
