  • Green and Nash Named to All-MIAA Teams


  • KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Alyssa Green was named all-MIAA second team and Jamie Nash was named to the MIAA all-defensive team as the conference honors were announced Tuesday. Green, a senior is currently sixth in the MIAA in scoring. She averaged 15.3 points a game and 2.4 assists per game, second best in the league. Nash leads the MIAA with 3.0 steals a game. The freshman had five or more 10 different times with a season-high seven at Fort Hays State on January 27.

  • Loss at Pittsburg State Ends Maverick Season


  • PITTSBURG, Kan. - Four Mavericks reached double figures but Nebraska-Omaha shot just 21 percent in the second half in an 87-64 loss at Pittsburg State Saturday. The loss eliminated the Mavs from postseason play and ended their season at 12-15 overall and 7-13 in the MIAA.

  • Panther Women Come Up Short At AIC, 67-50
  • The Adelphi University women's basketball team fell behind, 39-27, in the first half and were unable to rally back against American International College, falling 67-50. The Yellowjackets improve to 11-15 and 9-12 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers fall to 4-22 and 1-20.

  • NSIC Release (PDF) ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced today that Southwest Minnesota State senior #Megan Stadler# has been named All-NSIC second team. Stadler, a 5-foot-5 guard from Sioux Falls, S.D., had a record-breaking season for the Mustangs in 2009-10. She set the SMSU single-season record for assists with 167 and also broke the single-game record for assists when she handed out 14 against Minnesota, Crookston on Feb. 6. Stadler finished her career ranked second all-time in assists at SMSU with 474.

  • Mike Jewett Steps Down as SMSU Head Women’s Basketball Coach


  • COMPLETE RELEASE (PDF) MARSHALL, Minn. - Mike Jewett, who has spent the past four seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Southwest Minnesota State University, announced on Monday afternoon that he has declined a contract renewal and will no longer serve as the head women’s basketball coach. Jewett will continue to serve as an assistant professor in the Department of Wellness and Human Performance at SMSU through the end of the academic year. SMSU Director of Athletics Chris Hmielewski announced that current SMSU assistant coach Jina Johansen has been named interim head coach. A national search for a permanent head coach will begin soon. “The past four years have been both challenging and rewarding, and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to coach at SMSU,” Jewett said. “My experiences here have made me a better person and professional. I would like to thank the young ladies in our program for their hard work and commitment. Their efforts have strengthened the program and elevated it to a competitive level in a very tough conference.”

  • St. Paul, Minn. – St. Cloud State junior guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) has been named to the 2009-10 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s Basketball All-Conference Second Team. Barlow was named All-Conference for the second straight season.

  • Upper Iowa Flirts with Top-25 Upset
  • The Peacock women's basketball team took the floor in Dorman Gym for their final game of the 2009-10 season against the #19 Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul. Upper Iowa made a strong push for an upset of their nationally-ranked opponents, but couldn't quite hold up for the full forty minutes falling 67-55.

    Upper Iowa scored the first seven points of the game and held the top team in the Northern Sun Conference scoreless for the first five minutes of the game. At the midway point of the first half, the Golden Bears had crept back to tie the game at 11-11. The Peacocks were led by Cassandra Deiters, who scored six points on three buckets in the paint. The home team continued to force their guests into tough and contested shots, while working the ball inside on offense.

  • Peacocks Fall in Final Road Contest of 2009-10 Season
  • The Peacock women's basketball team closed out the road portion of the 2009-10 season Wednesday evening as they visited McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minn. to battle the Warriors of Winona State University. The Warriors jumped out to an early lead and wouldn't look back on their way to a 98-72 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory.Winona State scorched the nets in the first half of the contest while racing out to a fast 17-4 lead with 13:17 to play before halftime. While the visitors settled in shortly after, WSU extended their lead to 49-29 going into the halftime break. The Warriors shot an impressive 58.6% (17-29) in the first half of action which included a 69.2% (9-13) from beyond the three-point arc. The Peacocks shot 40% (10-25) from the field in the first half, but only connected on three trifectas.

  • LOCK HAVEN - After one of the finest individual seasons in school history, Clarion senior Lizzie Suwala has been named a first-team All-PSAC-West women's basketball player in voting by the league's coaches.

    Suwala ranked in the Top Five in the PSAC in four categories and in the Top 20 in six including finishing fourth in the PSAC in scoring at 18.1 points per game, the sixth-best single-season mark in Clarion history.

  • EDINBORO - With a PSAC Playoff berth at stake, the Clarion University women's basketball team rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit only to fall short at Edinboro 78-66 in what turned out to be the season finale for the Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon.

    Clarion (14-13 overall, 5-9 PSAC-West) needed to beat Edinboro (16-11, 7-7) to claim the final PSAC playoff berth awarded to the PSAC-West. Instead, the Fighting Scots go to the postseason and will travel to Gannon at 7 p.m. Tuesday night for a first-round game.
