Four women's basketball squads opened the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship on Monday. #7 Wright State posted a 61-43 win over #10 Youngstown State and #9 Milwaukee registered a 71-57 victory over #8 Valparaiso. The Raiders move on to a quarterfinal match-up with #2 Butler, while the Panthers will challenge #1 Green Bay.


• Thornton named Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Butler senior Melanie Thornton has been named Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of March 1-7. The selection marks Thornton's first career weekly honor from League office.

• Vikings Open Horizon League Championship Against UIC
Fourth-seeded Cleveland State begins play in the Speedway Horizon League Championship when the Vikings host fifth-seeded UIC on Wednesday (March 10) at 7:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center in a quarterfinal match-up. The winner will advance to play in the semifinals against the winner of Wednesday's quarterfinal between top-seeded Green Bay and ninth-seeded Milwaukee.


• Klein and Garland Named to All-Horizon League Teams
Cleveland State senior Kailey Klein (Cherry, Ill.) was named to the All-Horizon League first team for the third straight season and junior teammate Shawnita Garland (Charleston, W. Va.) was selected to the all-league second team for the second straight year after voting by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and select media.

March Madness has started and Detroit's women's basketball is right in the mix as the Titans, seeded third, will face No. 6 Loyola in a Horizon League Quarter-Final match-up at Calihan Hall on Wednesday, March 10 at 7 p.m.


• Three Titans Earn Horizon League Post-Season Awards


Three Titans were honored for helping Detroit’s women’s basketball team double its conference wins from just a year ago as senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian), sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) and head coach Autumn Rademacher all earned at least one 2009-10 Horizon League Women’s Basketball Post-Season Award.

Sixth-seeded Loyola opens play at the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship tonight when it takes on third-seeded Detroit at Calihan Hall. The Ramblers dropped both regular season meetings with the Titans, including a 53-50 game here on Jan. 16, by a total of 10 points and are eager to make amends. The winner will advance to Friday's semifinals to play either Butler or Wright State.


• Loyola Earns Six Seed, Draws Detroit In Horizon League Quarterfinals
The Loyola women's basketball team will open play at the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship on Wednesday night when it battles Detroit in a quarterfinal game. The sixth-seeded Ramblers (15-14) and third-seeded Titans will tangle at Calihan Hall with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team continues its run in the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship, playing at top-seeded Green Bay in the quarterfinals Wednesday. The No. 9 Panthers and Phoenix tip off at 7 p.m. at the Kress Center. Milwaukee advanced to the quarterfinals with a 71-57 win over eighth-seeded Valparaiso Monday evening on the road. Ashley Imperiale led four scorers in double-digits with 18.

Junior Ashley Imperiale scored 18 points to lead four Panthers scoring in double-digits as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team defeat Valparaiso, 71-57, Monday evening in the first round of the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship.Milwaukee (12-18) shot 50 percent from the field and limited Valpo (9-21) to just 33.3 percent shooting to advance to the semifinals Wednesday night at Green Bay. UWM and the top-seeded Phoenix tip off at 7 p.m. at the Kress Center.
