  • The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Wednesday that Aztec women's head coach Beth Burns is a recipient of a 2010 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Victory Club Award. The honor is presented to each WBCA-member head coach who achieves career wins of 200, 300, 400, 500 or more, in 100 victory increments during the 2009-10 campaign.

  • In the opening round of the 2010 Conoco Mountain West Conference Championships, the Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Team (19-10 overall, 9-7 MWC) earned a 60-55 victory over the UNLV Lady Rebels (13-18 overall, 6-10 MWC) on Tuesday night in Las Vegas. It's the first time since 2007 when they defeated San Diego State, 56-44, that the Cowgirls have won an opening round game of the MWC Tournament.

  • The Lobos' defense and the shooting of Eileen Weissmann and Sarah Halasz wasn't enough to carry UNM to a Mountain West tourney win over Utah. The Utes got a huge 3-pointer from senior Kalee Whipple in overtime and Utah scratched out a 51-45 quarterfinal win. The Lobos are expected to continue playing with a postseason invite from the NIT.

    It's New Mexico vs. Utah, Amy Beggin vs. Kalee Whipple, Don Flanagan vs. Elaine Elliott, tradition vs. tradition and a do-or-die situation. The only way this thing could be any better is if it was a Mountain West Conference championship game instead of a MWC quarterfinal tussle. The Lobos won their first-round MWC tourney game 67-54 over Colorado State and Utah pounded Air Force 63-40. The two teams battle Wednesday in the MWC tourney being held in the Las Vegas Thomas & Mack Center.
