The Draft? A Light Breeze

Though some dispersal drafts can have an immediate impact on the WNBA, the Monarchs’ dissolution probably won’t be one of them – for a couple of reasons.
First, the rapidly shrinking league’s rosters are much more solid than in the past, both for the teams that can get a quality player and for those who won’t. [...]

WNBA needs ownership that cares

Gratuitous camera shots of sports owners, a pox on every TV screen, hit its nadir with the Maloof brothers. They’re the thirtysomething Las Vegas casino barons who own the Sacramento Kings and recently pulled the plug on the Sacramento Monarchs.
No one had seen them much during the summer – any summer – until the 2005 [...]

NBA Commissioner Has Bad News for Women

In an interview with Sports Illustrated last week, NBA Commissioner David Stern said he really thinks “it’s a good possibility” that a woman will play in his league in the next decade.
This has been touted as good news for women. But is it?
To start with, it sounds like he is signaling the end of [...]

Missing the Point

Recently, NBA Commissioner David Stern told Sports Illustrated’s Ian Thomsen that he believes women could be playing in the NBA within the decade. Stern thinks that in the next 5-10 years, a women’s basketball player will emerge with the unrivaled potential to make it on a NBA squad. As I’m sure you can imagine, this [...]

WNBA pulls plug on Monarchs

After an intense, three-week effort failed to enlist Bay Area investors to assume control of the Monarchs, WNBA President Donna Orender on Tuesday delivered the final, perhaps inevitable blow.
The Monarchs era is over.
Folded, disbanded, dissolved. Or just call it a nasty divorce, minus the attorneys’ fees.
Ticha Penicheiro, Kara Lawson, Nicole Powell, Chelsea Newton, DeMya Walker, [...]

WNBA unable to save Sacramento, dispersal draft Monday

The WNBA ended speculation that the Sacramento Monarchs would relocate to the Bay Area, preserving the league’s 13 teams. Instead, the Monarchs will completely fold and the WNBA will hold a dispersal draft for their players on Monday.

WNBA to make one last cut — coaches

WNBA owners agreed on one last item at meetings last week to help everyone survive a tough economy — limiting coaching staffs to one head coach and one assistant. That means the Storm will lose either Nancy Darsch or Shelly Patterson (pictured right).
Storm coach Brian Agler, who’s also director of player personnel, made the decision, [...]

How The Death Of The Monarchs May Help The Sun Rise

What a terrible day for WNBA fans in Sacramento, a city that produced a league champion in 2005.   The Monarchs are no more; joining the late – and some great – franchises like Houston, Charlotte, Miami, Cleveland, Utah, Orlando and Detroit on the yellowing pages of the league’s scrapbook.

A League of Our Own: Why Must WNBA Players Be Compared to Men?

Over the weekend I read an article titled: “Five Reasons to Believe Women Will Play in the NBA”. While the WNBA has struggled to receive national notoriety, respect and fan support, I will admit it is somewhat encouraging to hear NBA commissioner David Stern give women’s basketball players respect saying, “sure, I think that’s well [...]

A Simple Question: Why?

This isn’t a set-up or a trap. It’s not a social experiment. It’s not a trick, and it certainly isn’t an excuse to be rude or irresponsible. Rather, I’m genuinely offering a platform to those who aren’t fans or followers of the WNBA a chance to intelligently explain why.
Call me crazy. Heck, I probably am. [...]
